Kraak ware (kraaksporselein) klapmuts bowl, Wanli c1610

Description

A Chinese Kraak ware bowl with moulded panels and with everted rim, finely potted and translucent, decorated in underglaze blue of a deep colour, and dating from the late Ming period. The rim of the bowl is decorated with two taotie masks and two diaper panels, each with shaped panels of fruit beneath, and with hanging ribbons in between.  The centre of the bowl is decorated with a typical scene of a bird on a rock surrounded by plants including lotus.  The back of the bowl is decorated with alternating shaped panels with 'jewels' and lingzhi.  The footrim has been neatly drilled with hole to enable the bowl to be hung up. Diameter 14.7 cm (5.8")

This shape of bowl is known in the Netherlands as a klapmuts.

Dating: Wanli c 1610

Condition:

Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration.  There is a small amount of glaze fritting around the delicate rim, often found on Kraak wares.
