Description

A well-decorated Chinese saucer, the rim moulded into panels, decorated with famille verte (Kangxi wucai) enamels and dating from the Kangxi period. The front of the saucer is profusely decorated around the rim with panels of flowers and birds, following the moulding of the saucer.  The centre of the saucer is decorated with peony flowers and more birds.  The back of the saucer is decorated with three flower sprays, and with an attractive underglaze blue mark of a hare gazing at the moon. Diameter 13.5 cm (5.3”)

The hare has been associated with the moon in Chinese tradition for a very long time.  In Daoism the hare was associated with the moon goddess Chang e who is said to live on the moon with her companion the hare who prepares the sacred herbs for immortality.

Dating: Kangxi c 1700-1720

Condition:

There is one short hairline from the rim (see final image).  No other damage and no restoration. The enamels are in good condition, as may be appreciated from the images.
