Description
A charming small and delicate Chinese export teapot made in Meissen ‘bullet’ form, decorated with overglaze grisaille enamels and gilding, and dating from the Qianlong period. The original porcelain handle has been substituted by an old metal replacement, which retains some of the cane binding. Width 13.5cm (5.3")
Both the shape and the decoration of scattered flower sprays are influenced by Meissen porcelain. The spout is known as a ‘dragon’ spout in Meissen and is a highly stylised dragon with open mouth forming the spout. The teapot would almost certainly originally have had a wishbone handle.
This teapot comes from the Joseph Jackson collection, and bears the sale label to the base.
The final photograph shows the size of the teapot when compared with an ‘AA’ battery. This is a small teapot!
Dating: Qianlong c 1750-1760
Condition:
The handle is replaced, and there is an area of surface repair above the handle, presumably to fill chipping. This is a surface repair, and does not go through the body of the teapot. Some rubbing to the gilding, and a tiny frit to the tip of the spout.
