Chinese Ca Mau 'Rocks on a Terrace' pattern teabowl & saucer Kangxi or Yongzheng
A Chinese Ca Mau cargo teabowl and saucer, decorated in underglaze blue and dating from the late Kangxi or Yongzheng period. Both the teabowl and saucer are decorated with an attractive design of peony and chrysanthemum plants emerging from pierced, decorative rockwork, and with butterflies flying above. Saucer diameter 11.4 cm (4.5"), cup diameter 7cm (2.8").
The Ca Mau cargo was recovered from the wreck of an ocean-going junk which sank off the Ca Mau peninsula in South Vietnam in around 1725, and sold in 2007 at Sotheby's Amsterdam. This cargo was helpful in clarifying the line between Kangxi and Yongzheng wares. As a consequence some wares which were previously ascribed to the Kangxi period are now known to have continued to be produced into the Yongzheng period.
This design was called the 'Rocks on a terrace' pattern by Sotheby's. This is a nice example.

Condition:
Both the teabowl and saucer are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. There are a few small glaze frits on the rims of both the teabowl and saucer. The glaze is also very good, with only minor softening as a result of submergence,and one or two small areas of light staining to the teabowl.
